Apple: Think Non-Secret

See: http://apple.slashdot.org/apple/05/03/04/138234.shtml?tid=123&tid=153&tid=3

It must be wonderful to be a fan of Apple's products.... first, you have to spend a fortune for propriatary hardware (which now, fortunately, has changed somewhat), then you have to bend over as Apple Inc bows to the might of the RIAA and removes features from your iTunes and iPod, and now apple is suing its own fans because they talked about a product early.

I mean, in order to put up with this and still love Apple, you'd have to be a masochist, right? I don't see any other reason to have loyalty to such an entity. While I was considering several Mac Minis to use as servers (with external USB hard drives to serve as backup), I really ethically can't do so. An iPod was never really in the running anyways (even though it's a really cool music player), as it doesn't support OGG, but the Mac Mini might just have done it for me.

I still say that the issue about whether online publications receive the same freedom of the press rights as traditional print/broadcast media is the far more important part of this story.

So you think apple shouldn't be punished for trying to squelch freedom of speech?

correction: It's BDSM, not BSDM. Blah... it's been a long day.

Meh, at the rate they're going, I figure they'll do themselves in.

Meanwhile, for a few minutes tonight I had a horribly strong urge to get a new iPod Shuffle. at FutureShop

For that matter, I'm not sure I fully understand why news organizations always want to 'break the story' before it's officially announced... I mean, if a new product or a war is about to get announced, why not just wait the extra 12 hours instead of spending so much effort trying to get ahead of the game... but then I am kinda lazy...

Though of course, having a product leaked a bit early can create better buzz. Having a war leaked early... well, presumably if the news organizations can do it, the enemy can too, but still...

Ari Fleischer (former Bush press secretary) had some really interesting things to say on Daily Show (Mar 3rd), including about how Bush wanted to make the news himself, which is balanced with the news reporters wanting to break stories. Turns out Fleischer isn't evil after all, but a pretty normal, nice guy. Who knew?

$$$

That's why.

Hopefully this thing with Bush won't turn into some horrible Wag the Dog scenario....

but their products are so cool looking (except ugly ipod minis) that's worth paying insane amounts of coin for them...no not really.

It's like any business you don't want info released about you upcoming product until you have a wharehouse full of them and ready to start shipping tomorrow,so if you competators copy your product you still have a 6 month head start.I do agree suing fans is a bit extreme even for apple and their super secretive R&D blackops...

I'm Fred and I'm a mac user....
