A Foolish Misunderstanding of Software Dev Costs

When using a CMS, make sure that you understand what it is capable of. Or find someone who does. Or find someone who doesn't want to cheat you out of a boatload of money.

Otherwise, you'll end up like this person mentioned in this post and solicit $80k (or $25k) in donations to build a 'new system' because you demonstrate a serious deficiency of understanding how it works.

The source post I've linked to contains a lot of sarcasm, but here's the technical rundown.

$80k to do what?

  • Install a php cache (pecl install apc)
  • Install a wysiwyg editor module (there are half a dozen)
  • Write a dozen lines of code to put some fancy trimming on node posts

I really need to start charging more...

A bit more info: The source post quotes a $25,000 figure so I'm not quite sure where the $80k one comes from. But the point remains. And if you read carefully, they're wasting the time to build from scratch. Doing that in this day and age is foolish, unless you've got some niche need and/or boatloads of cash. But hey, they're Republicans: what did you expect?
