The ever-so-mistitled 'Domain Registry of Canada'

A few days ago, I got a letter from the 'Domain Registry of Canada' about a particular domain I'd registered (a .com) some time ago with a different registrar than I normally did. It was one of these:

http://support.easydns.com/domain.slammers/droc.php

Thinking 'oh, I meant to transfer this domain away from that registrar anyway' (because the registrar was expensive), I went to their website.

Next step: logging in... but what was my username and password? Since I couldn't remember, I went to the 'reset password' functionality, where it was requested that I enter the domain name... odd, but I did it anyway.

The response I received was 'no such domain' or somesuch.

O K, something's up. Then I remembered that they're domain slammers.

*foreheadslap*

I would *never* in my life have filled out that paper form (I have an irrational hatred of paper mail). But no doubt a lot of people do, judging by the number of warning pages about it:

Afterward:

After a lot of tracking and searching, I finally did find the registrar who originally registered my domain. And like DROC, they charge too much and they've got a crappy UI.

I always find those registration renewal notices hilarious. Over 4 times the price that I currently pay for a domain? Hmmm..... let's think here............. no.

Have you tried 1&1? All of my .coms are registered through there now. Low price (~$7/year), good UI, and automatically reregisters a domain upon expiry unless you explicitly cancel service (I think the last one is a benefit anyway).

This comment reminded me: I wanted to implement a 'Similar Posts' section. That's done now. You'll likely find my story 'Why I dumped domainsatcost.ca' there.

I'm really surprised: I don't register a lot of .coms. If I did, I suspect I would go with something cheaper than my current registrar for .coms ($10 per). Maybe in the future.

I register a lot of .ca domains: and CIRA charges the registrar a lot for the domain, hence why the rates for them are so high. Oh well.
